Hi knocavoeboy, me again, you can open a pikes mouth by gently inserting your fingers into the bottom of the fishes gills thes easing the mouth open. Then use forceps to remove the hooks, no need gor gags.

Thats the method alright, but its not to be done if u are not comfortable handling pike. You will cut yourself and possible hurt the pike. What i would recomend is a garden glove, it will protect your hand and you will feel safer with it on, be more comfortable unhooking the pike making that quicker and therefore getting the pike back in the water with the least amout of damage and the shortest amount of time.

I use an old golf glove, and i bring one long forceps and one short pliers. The pikes jaw can be tough so i use the pliers there and the forceps for deeper in.

I dont even bother with an unhooking mat as i unhook a lot in the water or even in the net in the water, or sometimes i practice C&R at distance, usually after the first good run. This is an extremely hard method to teach and has to be learned from trial and error
